Abstract
This paper argues that the “Hard Problem” of consciousness is a result of a category error: to treat phenomenal consciousness (P), which is fundamentally first-person and unobjectifiable, as an object within relational, third-person frameworks. By clarifying the logical separability of phenomenal consciousness(P) from functional/access consciousness(A) using established literature such as Ned Block’s distinction and the philosophical zombies thought experiment, I then argue methodologically that P cannot function as a variable, property or explanandum in third-person scientific models. The core of this paper is a dual-track critique of any theory attempting to treat P as an object of study. First, through a Wittgensteinian “therapeutic” lens, I demonstrate that much contemporary public discourse around P is sustained by a grammatical confusion. Phenomenal terms (P-talk) do not successfully refer to a private object; rather, they arise as expressive outputs of A encountering the limits of third-person explanation. By revisiting the Beetle in the Box argument, I show that P is fundamentally unobjectifiable: once treated as an object of reference, it ceases to play the role it was meant to capture. Second, I demonstrate that frameworks of science, including the most permissive one, cannot accommodate P. Beyond arguments from publicity and causal closure, I formalize P’s informational inertia within a Bayesian framework. If P is logically separable from A, then P(E|A,P)=P(E|A) for any empirical evidence E. Observable data is thus equally compatible with or without P’s presence. Inclusion of P adds no explanatory power and violates parsimony, rendering it methodologically inert within third-person scientific inquiry. In acknowledging that the failure is not the signal of scientific shortcomings but reveals the category error, I explore the post-analytic implications. I advocate that mind science should focus rigorously on the mechanisms of A; ethics can be grounded in functional and observable criteria without appeal to metaphysically opaque phenomenal states ; and that philosophy of life and order should decouple the concept of subjective experience from biological or functional complexity, challenging related anthropocentric assumptions; and finally, personal subjective experience retains its first-person significance precisely in the recognition that it cannot be captured as an object of description.
Section I. Introduction: From “Hard Problem” to a Category Error
Across biology, ethics, and philosophy, one question recurs with remarkable persistence: what distinguishes a merely organized system from a living one, and a living system from a minded one? From Aristotle’s soul to Descartes’ res cogitans, from vitalism to contemporary neuroscience, subjective/phenomenal experience has repeatedly been invoked as the missing piece that completes the so-called hierarchy of order. Matter arranges itself into structure; structure gives rise to function; and somewhere beyond function, it is thought, subjective experience must appear.
This intuition continues to shape contemporary inquiry. In ethics, several frameworks treat subjective suffering as the foundation of moral status. In artificial intelligence, the question of whether machines could ever be “truly conscious” is taken to mark a decisive boundary between simulation and life and determine whether we need safety regulations. In the philosophy of mind, these concerns converge in what David Chalmers famously termed the “Hard Problem” of consciousness: the challenge of explaining why and how physical processes give rise to subjective experience at all.
The persistence of this problem has often been taken as evidence of a deep gap in our understanding of the world. Yet its remarkable resistance to progress in neuroscience and artificial intelligence suggests a different diagnosis. This paper argues that the Hard Problem does not signal an unsolved empirical mystery, but a category error arising from the very attempt to treat phenomenal consciousness as an object of third-person explanation.
Phenomenal consciousness is accessible only from “within” and cannot be identified, measured or compared from “outside”. As such, it cannot function as a variable, property or explanandum within objective frameworks. Importantly, this paper does not attempt to capture what phenomenal consciousness really is (which would be seen as an act of objectification). Its purpose is instead to critique the methodological move that treats phenomenal consciousness as something that could in principle be located, quantified, or explained alongside functional organization.
Once this category error is recognized, the Hard Problem dissolves, not because subjective experienced is denied, eliminated or reduced, but because it is revealed to mark a boundary of objective inquiry rather than an unsolved feature of the world. We can then shift focus from the inaccessible to the concrete, examining living systems and functional/access consciousness in ways that preserve the study of life and order without relying on metaphysical speculation.
And here is a roadmap of how the paper proceeds: In Section 2, I build upon established literature and distinguish between functional or access consciousness (A) and phenomenal consciousness (P), showing their logical separability. Section 3 adopts a Wittgensteinian “therapeutic” lens, illustrating how public discourse/ objectification of P is a grammatical confusion. Section 4 examines the limitations imposed by scientific methodology, demonstrating P’s informational inertia and explaining why empirical approaches cannot capture it. In section 5, I respond to potential counterarguments, including the performance contradiction, and further clarify my own arguments. Finally, section 6 explores post-analytic implications for mind science, ethics, philosophy of life and order, and personal subjective life, and acknowledges its limitations.
Section II. The Bifurcation of Consciousness: A vs. P
The “Hard Problem” is often obscured by a linguistic conflation of two distinct categories of consciousness. To proceed, this section separates consciousness into functional and phenomenal components, following Ned Block’s distinction between A and P. This distinction aligns with what David Chalmers classifies as the “Easy Problems” of explaining cognitive functions versus the “Hard Problem” of explaining experience itself.1Accordingly, this section attempts not only to show their conceptual difference, but also their logical separability that neither sort of consciousness entails the other.
Two things to clarify beforehand: 1. A property is relational if and only if it is fully specified by its position in a network of causal, functional, or informational relations, and two systems identical in all such relations cannot differ with respect to that property.
2. This section temporarily adopts the standard framing of phenomenal consciousness (P) as an object-like explanandum in order to highlight conceptual distinctions from access consciousness (A). The subsequent sections will show that treating P in this way is a methodological category error: P cannot legitimately function as a variable in third-person explanatory frameworks.
2.1 Access Consciousness (A)
A is characterized here as the measurable, functional capacities of a system. The present discussion is neural between specific empirical models—such as Global Workspace Theory or Integrated Information Theory—because the mechanistic details are not so relevant for the conceptual distinction at stake. What matters is that A is relationally defined: it consists in information being available for reasoning, report, and the rational guidance for action. 2
Concretely, A covers what Chalmers calls the “Easy Problems”: capacities like discrimination and categorization of stimuli, integration of information, flexible control of behavior, and verbal report. These are characterized by their causal roles: how inputs are processed, stored and transformed into outputs. Under this description, A is a third-person phenomenon. It can, in principle, be measured, predicted, and modeled from the outside, because it just is the pattern of relational organization that generates observable behavior and cognitive performance.
Accordingly, A is entirely at home within scientific inquiry. It is composed of exactly the kind of relational structure (causal, functional and informational) that objective methods are designed to track. Note how although A’s full term name is access consciousness, this section doesn’t define A in terms of access. That is because while this paper utilizes Block’s term A for continuity with existing literature, I hold that the term “access” can be misleading as it often presupposes a “hidden” object whose information can be accessed.
2.2 Phenomenal Consciousness (P)
To avoid a circular definition, we must not begin with a substantive characterization of P. If P were defined a priori as “that which is unobjectifiable,” the conclusion that science cannot capture would become a tautology. Accordingly, P is introduced here only in the minimal sense common to contemporary discussions: as the subjective, private, qualitative givenness of experience. (qualia) Where A concerns the functional processing—for example, wavelength detection, discrimination, and behavioral response in cases of perception of color red—P is invoked to denote what is ordinarily described as the experiential aspect of such perception: what it is like to see red, to feel pain, or to hear a melody.3Unlike A, which is defined by its causal connections, you can’t directly measure P’s intensity or compare it between subjects without being operationalized in relational terms. Any attempt to quantify P in this way effectively treats it as a functional variable akin to A, thereby obscuring the very phenomenal character it is meant to capture.
It is important to note that at this stage, I adopt the standard philosophical stance that P is qualitative, while remaining neutral regarding its ultimate objectifiability. P, so far, functions as a placeholder for the explanandum highlighted by the Hard Problem and the Explanatory Gap: the apparent difference between any purely functional description of a system and the fact that there is something it is like for that system.
It is even more important to emphasize that in this section P is still being treated in the standard way as an alleged explanandum or “target phenomenon” of theory. The later sections of the paper will go on and argue that this very objectifying stance towards P (treating it as something that could be located or modeled alongside A)---is a grammatical confusion and a methodological category error. However, for now, the usual way of talking is provisionally adopted in order to bring out the P/A distinction.
2.3 Logical Separability
This subsection strengthens the distinction between A and P by arguing for their logical separability, understood here in a sense that A does not necessitate P, nor does P necessitate A.
2.3.1 A does not necessitate P
The first direction is familiar from the literature. By definition, A is fully specified in functional and relational terms. A complete description of a system’s causal roles, information-processing structure, and patterns of report and behavior leaves nothing further to determine whether the system instantiates A.
Now consider two standard thought experiments. In the inverted spectrum case, two subjects are functionally and behaviorally indistinguishable in all relevant respects—they make the same discriminations, issue the same reports, and stand in the same causal relations to their environment—yet, by hypothesis, their color experiences are inverted (according to the spectrum): what is reddish for one is greenish for the other. 4
And in the philosophical zombie case, there is a perfect functional duplicate of a normal human being who walks, talks, reasons and reports having experiences in just the way a conscious person does, yet there is nothing it is like to be that system.5
If these scenarios are coherent, then it is conceptually possible for two systems to be identical with respect to all their functional and relational properties (A) while differing in their qualitative character (P) or even lacking P. In that case P cannot be analytically identified with A, and the presence of A does not logically necessitate the presence of P.
Nonetheless, these scenarios are deployed here not as empirical possibilities or metaphysical commitments---this paper remains neutral with respect to standard objections, such as Dennett’s rejection of zombie --- but as illustrations of logical separability within established philosophical discourse. The zombie one, especially, needs not be understood as definitively “dark inside”, but as highlighting that since there’s such logical possibility, no third-person profile of relational and functional organization (A) can determine whether there is anything it is like from the inside (P). From the outside, the zombie’s inner states remain a closed box: it is logically open both that they are phenomenally dark and that they are phenomenally lit, and no amount of external evidence can discriminate between these possibilities. This unclarity is part of what motivates later arguments that P resists objectification within third-person frameworks.
2.3.2 P does not necessitate A
The reverse direction is less often talked about but equally crucial for the sake of the argument. Consider first Ned Block’s “overflow” argument, which posits cases where subjects enjoy rich phenomenal experience (e.g. briefly presented visual arrays) that exceeds subsequent report or working memory capacity.6 However, this paper does not commit to his “overflow” argument even though it seems to support the claim that P does not necessitate A since “overflow” faces a familiar difficulty7: the primary evidence for “overflow” actually consists in subjects’ own later metacognitive judgments (“I saw more than I can say”). Such judgments themselves require memory encoding, attention and report—the very access mechanisms overflow was meant to outrun.
A purely conceptual route would avoid these evidential issues. Nothing in the notion “there is something it is like for the subject) analytically requires that this givenness become available for reasoning, verbal report, or rational control of action. One can coherently describe a situation where, for a subject, there is phenomenal character present, but this character never figures in any global integration, never guides deliberate behavior. The bare fact of subjective givenness itself carries no entailment to the functional roles that constitutes A.
And this description yields no contradiction. So just as 2.3.1 showed A without P is logically conceivable, here P without A is equally coherent. Logical separability holds in both directions.
Overall, section 2 has reconstructed the standard philosophical treatment of phenomenal consciousness (P) as a distinct explanandum from access consciousness (A), establishing their logical separability. In later sections, this paper will argue that treating P as an object alongside functional properties constitutes a grammatical confusion and methodological category error that helps explain the Hard Problem.
Section III. The Linguistic Critique—The Impossibility of Objectification
Having established the conceptual autonomy of P, this section turns to the first major prong of the critique: the linguistic impossibility of its objectification. The claim is that the very attempt to formulate a theory about P, to treat it as a theoretical variable, arises from a categorical confusion sustained by a misuse of language. Drawing on Ludwig Wittgenstein’s later philosophy, the section argues that the hard problem of consciousness is, in significant part, a grammatical confusion, and that the object which reductive and non-reductive theories alike seek to explain is a fiction generated by a misreading of first-person expressions as third-person descriptions.
3.1 The Grammar of Sensation
Wittgenstein’s central insight about private vs public language is that the meaning of a word is not an inner object it names but its use within a public language-game embedded in a shared form of life. For a word to have a stable meaning, there must be public criteria for its correct and incorrect application. Therefore, the language-game of reporting sensations, like saying “I am in pain” does not refer to private objects but express these public states. When a child learns the word “pain,”, it does not do so by an act of inner display, mentally pointing to a private feeling and attaching a label upon it. Instead, the word is grafted onto pre-linguistic, natural expressive behaviors, like crying, withdrawing, seeking comfort. “I am in pain” is a learned, linguistic substitute for a moan; it is a new form of pain-behavior, not a detached report about a hidden internal item.8 Its meaning is constituted by its role in a public context of interaction, response and correction, not by a successful reference to a private referent. This suggests a general implication that objecthood, in the sense relevant to explanatory theorizing, presupposes public criteria of identification and re-identification, comparison, and correction. Where no such criteria are available, the grammar of “inner object” or “private property” is already suspect.
3.2 The Beetle in the Box
This analysis appears more vivid in Wittgenstein’s “beetle in the box” analogy. 9Picture that every person gets a box containing something they call a “beetle”. No one can investigate the inside of so anyone else’s box, and each person says they know that a “beetle” is only by looking at their own. His point is that the thing in the box cancels out of the language-game altogether. It is logically irrelevant to the meaning of the word “beetle”. Whether each box contains a beetle, a coin, or nothing at all, the public use of the word “beetle” can proceed identically. The word “beetle” thus does not name the private object. It simply functions within a public rule-governed practice where the object itself is neither a necessary component nor a possible topic of discussion.
3.3 Phenomenal Terms and the Proof of Unobjectifiability
Although unobjectifiability has been used several times in the paper already, its explicit definition has not been given out, and it is also not expected for reader to accept that P is unobjectifiable until now: this section aims to give a proof.
First, the definition: X is unobjectifiable if it cannot be incorporated as an object of third-person, public, explanatory inquiry—including linguistic and scientific frameworks. And section 3 focuses on linguistic frameworks, whereas section 4 will focus on scientific frameworks.
The deductive reasoning is presented below:
Premise 1: Language is public and third person: All meaningful reference in language depends on public criteria for correct usage, verification, and re-identification, as mentioned in 3.1. By its very nature, language is a relational, third-person medium. (Now it is taken as true. It will be further justified in 3.4).
Premise 2: Private phenomenon cannot satisfy public criteria: Any phenomenon that is fundamentally private, by its very definition, is inaccessible to others, unverifiable, or lacking intersubjective criteria.
Intermediate Conclusion 1: From premises 1-2: Language only refers via public criteria, whereas private phenomenon cannot satisfy public criteria, therefore, language cannot refer to private phenomenon. (this is actually shown in Beetle in the Box thought experiment).In other words, private phenomenon cannot be referred by language.
Premise 3: As established in section 2’s definition for P and existing literature’s consensus, phenomenal consciousness P is private phenomenon.
Intermediate Conclusion 2: From intermediate conclusion 1 and premise 3: private phenomenon cannot be referred by language, and phenomenal consciousness is private, therefore, phenomenal consciousness P cannot be referred by language.
Corollary: From intermediate conclusion 2, it follows that phenomenal consciousness P cannot be referred to by language, that is, with linguistic frameworks. Since unobjectifiability is defined as inaccessibility to third-person, public, explanatory inquiry, we deduce that P is unobjectifiable with respect to language. That is, attempts to theorize, describe, or objectify P in linguistic terms cannot succeed, because all such frameworks depend on public criteria, which P as private phenomenon fundamentally cannot satisfy.
Importantly, even the very act of using the term/symbol P constitutes an attempt at objectification. This reveals an internal tension that by definition, P is private and cannot be captured; yet linguistic discourse treats it as if its privacy could be referred to. This attempt does not succeed. Phenomenal terms are only placeholders or gestures that mark the limits of third-person description rather than actually identifying a private referent. Accordingly, the formulations deployed in this paper—such as P being "the for-me-ness of experience" or "first-person givenness"—do not refer to any “inner object”. No theoretical, linguistic, or operational term can exhaust or positively identify what escapes objectification; any attempt to do so reproduces the very category error this analysis seeks to diagnose.
This completes the therapeutic diagnosis: philosophical discourse about phenomenal consciousness, including the present analysis, systematically generates placeholders for what it cannot contain as an object. What remains is not a theoretical posit but the methodological limit that any third-person explanatory inquiry meet. (The status of phenomenal terms as placeholders will be examnied in greater detail in section 3.4)
Thus, the unobjectifiability of P is not a metaphysical claim about its existence or reality, nor as a positive thesis about its intrinsic nature (as established, that is impossible). It is instead a methodological fact concerning the limits of third-person, public explanatory frameworks that they cannot capture P. The present analysis therefore does not offer a theory of P itself, but a critique of third-person explanatory practices that attempt to positively identify what resists objectification.
3.4 Self-modeling and the Meta-Problem
Even after establishing that P is unobjectifiable in Section 3.3, two questions naturally arise:
Why is language necessarily public and third-person? Any explanation beyond drawing from Wittgenstein? (taken as premise 1): After all, we speak from our own perspective and often feel that language expresses our private experience.
If phenomenal terms cannot refer to private experience, what do they actually refer to, and why do they exist at all? (As already briefly mentioned in 3.1, ordinary expressions like “I am in pain” or “that looks red” are grounded in functional and behavioral processes. They latch onto patterns of access consciousness, and their use is governed by public criteria of learning and correction. So, here, phenomenal terms are those that do not pick out any accessible, functional, public phenomenon, like “qualia”, “what-it-is-like”, “first-person givenness”, or “subjective occurrence”).
To address both questions, it is important to introduce self-modeling (aka self-mirroring) as a unifying explanatory framework. While the core argument for the unobjectifiability of P rests on Wittgensteinian analysis and deductive reasoning, self-modeling frameworks (such as Higher Order Theory, Hofstadter’s Strange Loop and Daniel Dennet’s Heterophenomenology) from cognitive science provide a complementary lens that helps clarify the mechanisms underlying the public, third-person nature of language and phenomenal discourse: Advanced functional systems possess the capacity to models themselves as objects in the world. This involves constructing third-person representations of their own perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral processes. Such models are relational and functional: they describe how information is processed, accessed, reported and acted upon.10
Because the self-model is itself a third-person construct, any linguistic expression grounded in it inherits this public, third-person character. Even expressions that appear paradigmatically “first-personal”—such as “I am in pain” or “I am here now”—are generated through the system representing itself within its own model. Their apparent immediacy does not consist in direct linguistic access to private experience, but in the efficiency and transparency of self-representation. As a result, no linguistic expression is genuinely first-person in the sense required to capture private, non-public phenomena.
This explains why, although subjects may intuitively take themselves to have “direct access” to their own experience, any attempt to articulate or conceptualize that experience necessarily proceeds through linguistic and conceptual resources that are public and third-person. Consequently, private experience cannot be captured, fixed, or objectified in language—even for the subject itself. That is why P is fundamentally, completely unobjectifiable: once treated as an object of reference, it ceases to play the role it was meant to capture. What is unobjectifiable is lost precisely at the point where linguistic or conceptual articulation begins.
Question 2 now becomes pressing: If phenomenal terms cannot refer to private experience, what do they actually refer to, and why do they exist at all?To address this question, we draw on self-modeling as a complementary explanatory framework. No self-model can fully represent the act of modeling itself as one of its own objects. While such models can encode indexical information, such as “here,”and “now,” they cannot encode the standpoint from which the representation occurs. As a result, structural gaps inevitably arise: the system encounters aspects of its own processing that cannot be captured within its third-person, relational self-model.
This limitation provides a direct explanation of phenomenal discourse. When a system attempts to describe its own functional and cognitive processes via language—language that is itself grounded in and generated by self-modeling—the unavoidable limits of self-representation generate the appearance of an inaccessible “inner object.” Terms such as qualia, what-it-is-like, or subjective occurrence do not refer to private experience directly. Rather, they function as linguistic placeholders marking the boundary of third-person description. In Wittgensteinian terms, phenomenal discourse does not describe the “beetle” itself; it arises because the system confronts the geometry of the “box.” What is being tracked is not a hidden object, but the in-principle limits of what can be represented publicly.
The meta-problem of consciousness, as formulated by Chalmers, asks: why do we think there is a hard problem at all? It concerns the intuition that there is an explanatory gap between physical processes and subjective experience.11 Reflective self-modeling provides a natural explanation: this intuition arises as a byproduct of systems representing themselves in a third-person, relational fashion. As A encounters the limits of its own descriptive capacity, self-modeling produces the appearance of an “inner object” and generates discourse about P. This process is fully empirical and tractable, involving self-representation, information flow, and behavioral expression, and is therefore a legitimate target of neuroscience. Once sufficiently sophisticated models of self-representation are in place, the meta-problem can, in principle, be explained.
Crucially, this account does not presuppose the existence of any private phenomenal entity. The explanatory gap and associated intuitions arise purely from structural features of self-representation: any system capable of third-person self-modeling—including philosophical zombies—will encounter the same representational limits and generate analogous explanatory unease. In the language of Wittgenstein’s, phenomenal discourse does not reveal or name the contents of the box (the “beetle”), but rather marks the box itself—the boundary of what can be captured, represented, or objectified. This underscores that the paper is a critique of third-person theorizing about P, not a theory about P itself.
3.5 Hard Problem and Methodological Quietism
However, while self-modeling explains the generation of phenomenal discourse, it does not resolve the traditional Hard Problem: why does pain feel like pain, or what it is like to see red? These questions target the private, unobjectifiable subjective occurrence itself, not the linguistic or functional outputs that A produces.
The distinction from illusionism is now clear.12Illusionist approaches attempt to explain away subjective experience, failing because they treat the subjective occurrence as an explanandum rather than recognizing its structural inaccessibility to third-person description. Our framework does not make any claim about the reality of P; instead, it clarifies that all theoretical and linguistic references to it function as placeholders marking the limits of objective inquiry.
The conclusion of the preceding linguistic analysis is not that phenomenal consciousness is unreal, but that it is theoretically intractable within standard objective frameworks. This methodological position differs from early Wittgensteinian quietism, which treated silence as a consequence of the logical limits of language. As Wittgenstein famously noted, “What we cannot speak about we must pass over in silence.”13 For him, attempting to speak of the “mystical” violated the logical form of language, and his silence is formal and aboslute.
By contrast, the Methodological Quietism advocated here is not a claim about experience being unspeakable or mystical, but about the categorical limits of objective inquiry. We do not pass over P because it is “mystical,” but because treating it as an explanandum within a third-person framework constitutes a category error.Similar to how Wittgenstein later put it, phenomenal experience is “not a something, but not a nothing either.” So, when it comes to objective inquiry, we remain silent about what is unobjectifiable.
At the same time, P can still be discussed in expressive, first-person “language-games” of art, phenomenology, or daily life. Even these seemingly first-person uses are grounded in public, intersubjective criteria: they do not grant direct access to private experience but operate through the same relational, third-person structures that define all meaningful linguistic practice. What Methodological Quietism achieves is a dissolution of the Hard Problem: not by explaining it, not by explaining it away, and not by silence for its own sake, but by showing that attempts to objectify the non-relational within third-person frameworks are fundamentally category errors. Our silence is methodological, not metaphysical.
Section IV. The Methodological Critique—Why P Fails as a Scientific Variable
Having shown in Section 3 that P resists linguistic objectification, this section mounts the second prong of the critique from the philosophy of science (scientific methodology). Even conceding P as a theoretical posit for argument’s sake, it cannot integrate into scientific explanatory frameworks wihtout violating core methodological constraints of empirical science. Three core constraints—publicity, causal relevance, and Bayesian modeling—each exclude P.
4.1 Publicity’s Asymmetry :No Intersubjective Criteria
Scientific explanation presupposes publicity: evidence and criteria must be intersubjectively accessible.14 While logical positivism's strict verifiability criterion is outdated, and Popperian falsification faces its own challenges, the core demand fpr intersubjective identification, comparison, and measurement persists. The statement “X has phenomenal consciousness” lacks third-person criteria for, again, identifiction, comparison and measurement. No public criteria distinguish rich P from weak P, P from no P, or one subject’s P from another’s while holding all funcitonal variables fixed.
Even unobservables, which modern science accommodates, like dark matter and dark energy can be examined through discriminative signatures like gravitational lensing and cosmic expansion. 15P lacks even indirect discriminative signatures.
4.2 Causal Relevance: Physical Closure Excludes P
Science constructs causal models linking inputs, mechanisms, an doutputs. The pirnciple of physical causal closure states that every physical event has sufficient physical causes. 16P’s causal status introduces a dilemma:
Non-physical P (dualism) requires interaction with physical systems, violating closure. Every P-influenced event then deamnds double causation, (physical+phenomenal), also known as overdetermination, an explanatory vice rejected by parsimony(Occam’s Razor) because such adds explanatory structure wihout increasing any predictive power.16 (this will also be demonstrated in 4.3, though more formally).
Physical P fares worse. For instance, observable effects all trace to functional organization (A). So, P becomes methodologically epiphenomenal in a sense that whether it is present or absent, causal chains proceed identically 16(similarly reflected in the Beetle in the Box thought experiment).An example would be a needle prick that results in a report of sharp pain. The entire causal chain can be described exhaustively in physical terms, neuroscientifically: nociceptor activiation (like C-fiber firing) leads to thalamic projection, which it turn activiates somatosensory cortical regions, recruits language-processing areas, and culminates in verbal or behvioral pain reprots. 17At no point does the introduction of P, construed as “pain qualia”, add an additional causal step or explanatory contribution. Science tracks mecahnisms so idle properties drop out.
Therefore, P fails the crierion of causal relevance asked for scientific explanation. Theories invoking it either overdetermine or idle.
4.3 Bayesian Inertia: The Redundancy of the Phenomenal Variable
Bayesian confirmation theory, widely used to justify unobservable theoretical posits such as Higgs boson, delivers the decisive blow.18 The failure of P as a scientific variable can be even sharpened using the tools of mutual information and Minimum Description Length within a Bayesian model selection framework. Consider two competing models of the same empricial domaain:M1, which includes a phenomenal variable P, and M2, which does not. For M1 to be scientifically preferable, P must supply discrimintative information about the emprirical domain that M2 cannot capture(it must improve our ability to predict data).
Let A be the set of all functional data and E be the empricial evidence we observe. In scinetifically useful model, we expect: I(P;E|A)>0 (meaning that the mutual information between P and E, given the functional data A, must be greater than zero).
Such an ineuqality would mean that, over and above what A already tells us, P reduces unvertainity(tells us more) about E. However, once the logical separbility is established in Section 2 (and of course lots of other parts in this paper), in every empirical observation, the functional state A of the brain provides all the conditional information necessary to predict the outcome E. The turns out to be informationally inert due to this fact that A is a sufficient statistic for E with respect to all third-person outcomes. Given A, adding P does not change any likelihoods.
So, formally: P(E|A,P)=P(E|A). And this immediately affects Bayesian model comparison. The Bayes factor Λ comparing M1 to M2 is defined as: Λ=P(E|M1)/P(E|M2).
For M1, which includes P as a latent variable, the marginal likelihood of the evidence is: P(E|M1)=∫ P(E|A, P) P(A,P) dA dP. But now P(E|A,P) equals to P(E|A), since P is inert, this integral simplified exactly the the marginal likelihood of M2 which omits P, shown formally as:

It is vital to note that this is not a tautology of what we have already established (logical separability), because here even when we assume P exists as theoretical posit and is caused by A, it still incurs an over-parameterization penalty. In Bayesian model selection, the Occam penalty favors parsimony.19 That is to say that models with more parameters, which in this case refer to M1, must substantially outperform simpler models, M2 here, to compensate for their added complexity. However, in our case, M1 explains the data no better than M2 since they yield the same likelihoods. As a result, P(M1|E)<P(M2|E). P is not merely deemed idle but is actively disfavored as a theoretical posit.
Consequently, P is not merely unobservable in the sense of a remote particle. It is informationally inert. It is a redundant parameter that can be toggled to any value, or removed completely, without changing the mathematical output of the system. Science, Bayesianly seen as an enterprise of updating priors based on discriminative data, must therefore treat P as a void. Within the third-person inquiry of science, it is not a mystery waiting to be solved, discovered or explained, but a redundancy to be discarded. Nonetheless, this verdict concerns scientific modeling only and carries no implication about the ontological reality of first-person experience; it is just not a scientific variable within third-person explanatory framework, so its metaphysical existence can neither be denied nor asserted by science, and in principle, any public, third-person theory.
Section V. Counterarguments and Responses
This section preempts and then addresses the most pressing critiques of the arguments developed in Sections 2-4. Notably, counterarguments regarding ethical considerations are not included in this section because section 6 will specify them in the post-analytic context.
5.1 Performative Contradiction: “Your Paper Objectifies the Unobjectifiable”
Potential Objection: Your entire paper commits the precise category error it diagnoses. If phenomenal consciousness is grammatically incoherent as a third-person object, evaporating under Beetle-in-the-Box scrutiny into a meaningless placeholder, then your 5000 words of analysis, equations, citations, and gestures towards “first-person givenness” or “subjective occurrence” objectify P outright. This is performative nonsense because either the discourse succeeds (proving P objectifiable, refuting your thesis) or fails (rendering your paper gibberish). Wittgenstein’s therapy dissolves your own argument—the beetle cancels out, leaving no P to be discussed, no Hard Problem to be dissolved.
Response: Critics confuse the map with the territory, where the map is a meta-linguistic diagnosis(this paper’s A-language) and the territory is first-order objectification. When a physicist writes the symbol ∞ (infinity), they do not claim to have captured an infinite object inside a finite notebook, and the ink on the page remains finite. They are essentially using a finite symbol to gesture towards a limit where the mathematical framework breaks down, delineating the boundary beyond which the system cannot extend without contradiction.
Precisely so here: These 5000 words are not descriptions of P. No term—“givenness”, “occurrence” or even the term “Phenomenal Consciousness” itself---refers to the actual unobjectifiable first-person reality (makes no characterization of its existence). Instead, they meticulously map the shape of the representational void where A encounters its own limit. Every Bayesian equation, zombie scenario and Wittgenstein riff performs pure A-language, that is, public, relational, third-person analysis of functional self-modeling’s explanatory gap. Translate this paper verbatim into a philosophical zombie’s mouth: output identical, beetle untouched.
Section 2 provisionally adopts the literature’s P-posture precisely to reveal in sections 3-4 its grammatical and methodological collapse. The paper is a self-referential demonstration that all P-discourse, including this one, generates placeholders, not actually referring to the unobjectifiable first-person reality. I am not describing the “beetle”. I am proving that the “Box” is empty of public data.
The critic may then ask” ”If nothing you say refers to P, does your paper, including its claim about unobjectifiability, matter?”
This objection conflates ontological positivity with methodological diagnosis. While any attempt at positive characterization of P necessarily fails, the claim of unobjectifiability is not a claim about P itself. Rather, it is a diagnosis of the limits of third-person inquiry and discourse about P. . This paper matters not as a theory about P but as a critique of third-person theories trying to describe or theorize P---exposing their grammatical confusion(Section 3) and methodological redundancy (Section 4) .
The assumption that --since X does not exist as an object, the very claim that “X does not exist as an object” is a violation-- is mistaken. Positive characterization of X fails, but negative characterization of our discourse about X remains legitimate precisely because it signals the impossibility of any positive characterization of X: it does not assert the existence or property of an entity, it simply marks a conceptual boundary. To put it simply, objectifiability is never a positive characterization or property of P(that would be impossible) but a conceptual limit of our own inquiry.
As Wittgenstein puts it at Philosophical Investigations §304, the "beetle" is "not a something, but not a nothing either"—a negative therapy that dissolves the private-object confusion without substantive depiction. P.M.S. Hacker reads this as showing that philosophical diagnoses chart conceptual limits, not hidden objects. 20Max de Gaynesford reinforces: such negative gestures succeed as boundary-markers, enabling philosophy's therapeutic exit. 21Rejecting unobjectifiability as a “mere denial” risks reinstating the very category error that the diagnosis dissolves.
5.2 Causal Paradox: “If P Inert, Why This Paper?”
Potential Objection: P has no causal role, as shown in section 4. Yet your brain produced this paper about it. Either P caused the text (falsifying your own argument of inertia) or it is random noise.
Response: Just like a mathematician writing a paper about infinity doesn’t mean infinity causes them to write the paper, writing about P does not mean P is the cause of my paper. The text comes from A, entirely. As already established in section 3, all phenomenal talk is the result of systems meeting the limits of self-modeling(A), and the actual unobjectifiable first-person reality is untouched . The existence of this paper does not prove P has causal power; it proves that A is a physical system capable of detecting its Explanatory Gap. A Philosophical Zombie version of me would write the same paper for the exact same reason: not because it has a “beetle”, but because it has a “Box” whose interior, whatever is inside, cannot be included in third-person self-modeling.
5.3 Scientific Optimism
Potential Objection: Unobjectifiability is a temporary state. Just as atoms were once “unobservable” before the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope, P is simply a variable for which we currently lack the proper instruments. By labeling it permanently unobjectifiable, you are making an armchair prediction that stalls scientific progress.
Response: This objection commits a category error by conflating technical unobservability with logical unobjectifiability. Atoms were like missing pieces in a puzzle; the causes inferred from observed effects that used to be unseen. P, however, is not a missing cause for any observed effect. The physicalist account of the needle prick leading to a pain report (Section 4.2) is already causally complete. Adding P to the chain doesn’t find a missing piece.
If we try to bridge the gap by relaxing the criteria for objectivity (as suggested by neurophenomenology), we are not advancing science; we are dissolving the very definition of third-person inquiry. Science is invoked to transform subjective opinions “I feel hot” into public facts “25 Celsius degrees”. P cannot become such a variable without ceasing to be P.
5.4 Zombie Incoherence: “Your Separability Crumbles”
Potential Objection: Bayesian inertia presupposes zombie-coherence, but zombies are in fact incoherent. Functionalism (Putnam, Lewis) analytically ties A to P through their realizers. No perfect A-duplicate can lack P, just as water cannot lack H2O. Integrated Information Theory measures P directly via ɸ > 0 computed on A-structure. Logical separability is not a neutral standard from the literature. It is essentially question-begging. Without zombie coherence, P(E|A,P)=P(E|A) collapses.
Response: Philosophical Zombies functions in this paper as a provisional thought experiment, in order to demonstrate the contemporary discourse around P in the literature (Section 2.3). The Bayesian formalism requires no conceivability argument at all. Empirical functional consciousness A predicts all observable evidence E perfectly, as neuroscience consensus confirms. Adding P as a variable yields P(E|A,P)=P(E|A) regardless of the coherence of zombies.
Even if one accepts A fully realizes P in functionalist or IIT terms, P reduces to a redundant label on an A-subset, much like an identity-theoretic claim. Scientific modeling eliminates such redundancy through parsimony. And IIT’s ɸ metric quantifies information integration, which is itself an A-property, not “what-it-is-like” character of P.
Notably, the logical separability highlighted in this paper is methodological rather than metaphysical. It is invoked to show that scientific and cognitive frameworks cannot treat P as an objectifiable variable. Whether philosophical zombies are coherent or not does not affect the point that all empirical prediction is handled by A alone, and P-talk belongs to expression, not explanation.
5.5 Aesthesia and Quantum Consciousness
Potential Objection: If phenomenal consciousness is unobjectifiable, then what happens during general anesthesia? Surely science is “turning off” the subjective experience, proving P is a physical variable we can control. Science is attempting to bridge the gap between A and P through theories like Orchestrated Objective Reduction. 22
Response: This objection rests on a category error regarding what is actually “turned off”. Anesthesia does not deactivate a latent phenomenal entity; rather, it effectively shatters the relational architecture A. Clinical evidence has shown that anesthetic agents disrupt communication between specialized cognitive modules. This results in a collapse of the system’s ability of global integration, feedback loops and information synthesis.23 As the functional map fragments, the system ceases to operate as unified cognitive representation, rendering P empirical inert.
Regarding quantum consciousness, even if we accept the Orch-OR premise that microtubules engage in quantum Objective Reduction, we have still only identified a more microscopic layer of the functional architecture A. Describing a quantum vibration is, in principle, no different from describing a synaptic firing, in a sense that it is still a third-person description of a physical event. No matter how sophisticated the physics is, theirs is still no logical bridge that explains why a specific vibration is a feeling. 24By hunting for P in the quantum realm, a category error is still committed.
5.6 Tautology Charge :” You Define P as Nonrelational, so science cannot touch it”
Potential Objection: The argument is tautologous. Section 2 defines P via first-person givenness, then “discovers” it resists third-person inquiry. This is merely question-begging stipulation. Any property defined as “unobjectifiable” trivially evades science—like defining unicorns as “undetectable”.
Response: The charge mistakes therapy for tautology. Critics suspect circularity because they assume unobservability must be proven like a scientific hypothesis. Wittgenstein’s “Beetle in the Box” does not work like that: it doesn’t prove the beetle unobservable; it reveals public language excludes private reference entirely. “Beetle” means nothing about box contents, so the private drops out of the language-game automatically.
Section 2 adopts literature’s standard P definition (“what-it-is-like,” Nagel/Chalmers).Only thereafter do sections 3-4 reveal this positively framed explanandum as grammatical incoherent and empirically redundant, thus showing how positive characterization fails and P is thus “unobjectifiable”.
Whereas unicorns fail positive tests (no fossils, no DNA, no sightings), P fails the negative test: no evidence distinguishes “rich P” from “weak P” from “no P” once A is fixed. All empirical outcomes identical. So, in one word, “objectifiability” is not stipulated; rather, this paper shows precisely how standard P fails as an object.
5.7 Why Not Illusionism/Eliminativism: “why preserve P’s first-person reality?”
Potential Objection: If P-discourse is grammatically confused (section 3) and empirically inert (section 4), illusionism or eliminativism follows straightforwardly: P never occurs as “first-person reality.” Preserving an unobjectifiable, unreferrable P serves no purpose—it’s eliminativism with extra theological steps. Why not accept the honest cut: no P, no Hard Problem?
Response: This objection fails by attempting to extract an ontological conclusion (denial of P’s existence) from a methodological diagnosis (redundancy of P as a third-person variable), and it commits the binary error that if P does not exist as an object, it must be an illusion. Illusionism and eliminativism make the positive assertion that phenomenal consciousness (P) does not occur, an assertion that requires a premise they cannot prove. The logic of Methodological Quietism follows a disciplined chain that illusionism breaks:
Premise A: all P-discourse is A placeholders from self-modeling limit
Premise B: P adds zero empirical information
Conclusion 1: Third-person theory cannot capture/reference P
Conclusion 2: Theory must stay silent on P-occurrence (methodological quietism)
Illusionism breaks at step 4 since it asserts “P never occurs” using premises A+B. But A+B only show that P cannot be theorized into a variable of objective inquiry, thus, they only justify silence, not denial. Denial requires additional Premise C: All reality must be third-person capturable. Section 3 already rejects such Premise as grammatical confusion—P-terms cannot refer to private objects in public language-games. And this does not prove that the first-person reality is an “illusion”; it only proves that language-games are third-person tools. To deny P is to objectify it just as much as to affirm it. Both the Panpsychist (who says “P is everywhere”) and the Illusionist (Who says “P is nowhere”) are trying to force P into a third-person variable, or in other words, trying to open the “Box” to see the Beetle.
The Methodological Quietist position is the only one that respects the logic of the “Beetle”. This paper assets nothing about P’s occurrence. It diagnoses only the grammatical impossibility of third-person reference and empirical redundancy of P as theoretical variable. P is “not a something, but not a nothing either”—neither denied nor theorized. By refusing to deny or assert it, this paper is acknowledging that while the “map”(third person inquiry/A/self-modeling) is causally complete, it does not and cannot exhaust the “territory” (first person/subjective/P).
Furthermore, under a perfect theory of self-modeling (A), why a system produces the sentence :”This pain is unbearable” is explained. So, the meta-problem is functionally solved. But the hard problem is still there: the subject invariably rejects this as an exhaustive account, asking: “But why does the pain actually hurt?” Illusionism and Methodological Quietism diverge sharply at this specific moment: Illusionism labels such a protect as a cognitive error. It is choosing the map over the territory. The illusionist claims to “explain” hurt by explaining hurt-reports. But “explaining away” the hurt as illusion essentially uses third-person theory to gaslight the first-person observer by dismissing the raw feel itself. Methodological quietism identifies such protest as theory’s boundary: first-person experience resists explanation because explaining it objectifies it.
5.8 The Specter of Panpsychism
Potential Objection: Besides critics who think this paper is illusionism in denial, others may also argue that: by decoupling P from functional complexity, your framework inevitably leads to Panpsychism. Everything can have consciousness, and it is a fundamental, ubiquitous feature of all matter. If P is independent from functional complexity, then a rock can have its interior experience as well?
Response: This objection fundamentally misinterprets the Quietist position. Panpsychism is a metaphysical assertion which claims to know that P inheres in all physical systems as an intrinsic property. Quietism does not assert P is everywhere; it asserts that the question of “where P is” or “who has P” falls outside objective language and inquiry. We can’t prove or disprove a rock’s P, so this is not panpsychism which attempts to build a physics of the soul.
Section VI. Post-analytic Implications and Conclusion
6.1 Mind Science: Towards Pure A-Theory
If the Hard Problem gets recognized as a category error arising from the attempt to objectify the non-relational, rather than a scientific deficit, mind science is liberated from the pursuit of unobjectifiable “phenomenal properties” . I advocate for a methodological functionalism that focuses rigorously on the mechanisms of A and the exhaustive resolution of the Meta-Problem. Under this shift in paradigm, a research program would primarily prioritize the structural and computational constraints that compel a physical system to generate P-discourse and claim to have a Hard Problem in the first place. This aims for the completion of a relational map, namely the exhaustive description of how information is integrated, broadcasted and reported within the system. Instead of searching for NNC, which mistakenly assumes P is a variable that can be located in a physical node, mind science would focus on the global availability of information and the system’s recursive self-modeling, whether via Predictive Processing, GWT, IIT or other functional theories. This approach does not claim to explain away the subjective experience; rather, it achieves empirical closure by showing that third-person account of the system is causally and logically complete without any need for phenomenal variables.
6.2 Ethics: Towards Functional Care
Historically, the search for the “location” or “mechanism” of consciousness has been driven by the Problem of Other Minds—the desire for a test to decide who or what deserves moral care. However, this paper reveals that using P as an ethical benchmark is a category error. Because P is non-relational and unobjectifiable, it can never function as a public criterion for a moral community. Ethics, therefore, must be grounded strictly in Functional Consciousness (A) which is the public, relational map of a system’s behavior.
In our interaction with a system—for instance, a cat—we cannot objectively confirm (nor deny) the presence of a phenomenal “Beetle”. However, we do not harm the cat because its functional architecture mirrors humans’: it also exhibits harm-avoidance, distress signals and goal-directedness. On the other hand, when we cut a tree, we cannot objective deny (nor confirm) the presence of a phenomenal “Beetle”. However, since the tree lacks the functional consciousness (for example, response systems), it does not trigger our direct moral sympathy. These two cases show how our moral judgment has never been based upon actually peeking into other creatures’ “box”( we can’t), but rather on observable functional profiles that predict shared interests and suffering capacity. Notably, this suffering capacity relates not to phenomenal experience, but to whether the system receives, processes and responds to signals in ways that align with our own harm-avoidance architecture.
Here I present the edge case of advanced synthetic intelligence. The debate over AI Rights typically stalls on the question of whether a machine “actually feels.” Under this paper’s framework, this question is not only unanswerable but illegitimate, Even if AI possesses phenomenological experience (note “even if”: since this is not a legitimate claim as we have established in this paper: we cannot confirm or deny), its non-relational, non-comparable and unsayable nature ensures that it would not—and cannot—“translate” and report it into “consciousness” as human language understands it. Because we cannot verify this P from a third-person view either, we must remain silent and should not even ask the question of “whether AI feels” . Yet, if AI exhibits human-like functional consciousness, like selective attention and goal-directedness, this alone warrants ethical and safety considerations. Critically, we should refuse to let the Hard Problem distract from the reality of safety. The risk of harm to humans is decoupled from AI’s P because we don’t need the AI to have a “soul” before it can threaten us.
By recognizing that P is a black box for all systems (including other humans) except oneself, the difficulty of ethical judgment actually gets significantly reduced. We are no longer burdened by the need to “speculate” about the hidden interior. This is not a cold or reductive dismissal of the subject; rather, it is the only responsible way to build a moral community. By anchoring ethics in public observation rather than unconfirmable metaphysical speculation, we ensure that our moral duties are based on the reality of a system’s interactions rather than our own subjective guesses.
6.3 Philosophy of Life and Order
Lots of traditional views treat life’s organizational complexity as a ladder towards human-like consciousness, picturing a vertical hierarchy where subjective experience’s “richness” scales with functional complexity. This paper diagnoses this as a final category error: we must decouple a system’s subjective experience P from its functional complexity A.
We often mistake the realization of the box—the high-level functional ability to model one’s own limits and engage in phenomenal discourse—for the existence of the “thing inside the box”. We assume that because a human can linguistically obsess over Hard Problem, their P must be “thicker” or more “significant” than that of a simpler organism. However, a simpler system’s lack of recursive architecture tells us nothing about the validity of its P occurrence. To assume P “scales” with A is to treat the subjective as a measurable physical variable ( a substance that can be diluted or concentrated).
Therefore, in the contest of Life and Order, we must shift our focus from the search for a subjective essence (P) to the study of Systemic Organization (A). Order in biological systems should not be viewed as a vertical hierarchy of subjective richness, but as the functional capacity of a system to maintain its own integrity against entropy. If we decouple the "Beetle" from the order of life, we stop viewing simpler organisms as "dimmer" versions of ourselves. Instead, we see a diverse array of orders. Whether it is a single cell maintaining its membrane or a human brain navigating a social network, life is found in the persistence of a functional map(A) against the disorder of the environment, not found inside the “box”.
6.4 Personal Life: Why this is not Nihilism
First, it is important to clarify that this framework does not demand that we stop talking about our experiences. This “silence” applied only to the language-game of third-person description (like science, analytic philosophy, metaphysics, and this paper itself). It does not, and should not, silence the first-person expression found in art, phenomenology or daily life. Following later Wittgenstein, words cannot literally refer to private objects; their meaning lies in public use within a shared form of life. Even statements that appear first-personal—such as “I am in pain” or “she is conscious”—are grounded in intersubjective criteria. They do not grant direct access to private experience, but serve as relational acts of expression. In daily life, such statements are not scientific reports about a “beetle” in a “box”; they convey lived relationality. In the laboratory, we must remain silent about P because it is empirically inert; but outside these contexts, language freely expresses relational experience.
One may criticize that this paper leads to nihilism because it excludes P from public discourse, seemingly rendering subjective experience scientifically irrelevant or meaningless. However, this misunderstands the gain. Quietism actually provides the ultimate preservation of the subject against Nihilism, and the significance of my life is protected by this methodological boundary. The fear that a complete functional map A “explains away” the self is revealed to be a category error. The significance of personal experience is exactly preserved in such a way since: if it were a physical variable or captured as a linguistic concept, it could be measured, manipulated, or eventually discarded as an “illusion”. But because this paper has demonstrated that P cannot be included in the causal chain of objective facts, the subject is neither explained nor explained away.
6.5 Conclusion: The Grammar of the Unsayable
This paper has sought to demonstrate that the “Hard Problem” is not a scientific mountain to be climbed, but a category error, a linguistic boundary to be respected. By adopting the standard literature’s own definition of Phenomenal Consciousness P as the “what-is-likeness” that is conceptually distinct and logically separable from Access Consciousness A, I have shown how this objectification fails through Wittgensteinian therapy and Bayesian causal analysis.
By distinguishing the Meta-Problem (the functional reasons why we speak of P and the explanatory gap) from the Hard Problem(the unsayable occurrence), I have addressed major counterarguments while further clarifying my argument. I have demonstrated how third-person inquiry—by the very definition of the terms it employs—cannot deny or assert the ontology of P. Science is liberated to map the functional architecture, while philosophy acknowledges that the territory of the subject P remains outside the jurisdiction of third-person data.
6.6 Limitations and Future Inquiries
Several limitations of the present argument should be made explicit since clarifying them is important both to avoid overinterpretation of the thesis and to indicate appropriate directions for further work.
First, the argument developed in this paper is methodological and primarily negative, rather than constructive or metaphysical. Its central claim is not that phenomenal consciousness instantiates a particular ontological category, nor that it possesses specific causal or explanatory properties, but rather that treating phenomenal consciousness as an object-variable within third-person explanatory frameworks involves a category error. The paper therefore does not offer a positive theory of what phenomenal consciousness is, and any such constructive or ontological commitments would require additional premises not defended here.
Second, the distinction between P and A, and their logical separability, while central to the argument, is treated here at a deliberately high level of abstraction. This abstraction serves to foreground structural and methodological issues rather than offering empirical engagement. As such, it leaves open questions about how, in practice, scientific and cognitive models instantiate A and attempt to account for experience without implicitly objectifying P. Future work could examine how objectifying explanator frameworks rely on A structures and where such frameworks encounter the in-principle limits of incorporating P, without presuming that P itself can be represented, measured or predicted.
Similarly, third, the paper itself does not resolve the meta-problem of consciousness, as articulated by Chalmers and others. While the argument suggests that the meta-problem—explaining why agents make reports and form beliefs about consciousness—concerns access consciousness and representational mechanisms rather than phenomenal consciousness itself, this claim remains programmatic. Importantly, the core methodological argument of this paper--P is unobjectifiable and cannot function as a variable in objective explanatory models--does not depend on these assumptions. Any claim that zombies have P or P exists independently of A would already constitute the very objectification that the paper identifies as a category error.
